Following the Paleo Diet does not by any means restrict you from enjoying some of the delicious snacks and deserts that are common in the regular Western diet. All that is needed is to find some healthy replacements for ingredients such as sugar, flour and other grains which we want to avoid when following Paleo.
The recipes for several different kinds of Paleo cookies on this page will outline some of these ingredients and tell you exactly how to make delicious cookies that are perfectly in line with the Paleo Diet. There are even chocolate and chocolate chip recipes which follow the diet guidelines very closely too
Before we get to the cookie recipes, make sure you take a minute to check out the Paleo Recipe Book which is by far the very best Paleo resource I have seen anywhere. It contains over 370 beautifully illustrated recipes, including deserts, snacks and of course . . . cookies! Click Here to read all about it.
The Best Paleo Cookie Recipes I have Found
Ok so after scouring the web and trying out a few good looking recipes, here are what I believe to be the best cookies around that fall within Paleo guidelines. This is based on taste, how easy they are to make and also compliance with Paleo and it’s fundamental principles – recipes are in no particular order.
1. Chocolate Chip Cookies – Thanks to BakerGal.com
This cookie recipe comes from Baker Gal’s experimentation with a couple of popular Paleo cookie ideas. She has taken parts from each one and created her own delicious variation, something I highly recommend you try! The Paleo Diet is all about experimentation in my opinion and coming up with creative ways to replace unhealthy ingredients that are prominent in most people’s diets.
Ingredients
- 5 oz (1 1/4 cups) fine almond flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup raw agave nectar or 1/4 cup raw honey plus 1 to 2 tsp water
- 1/8 cup macadamia nut oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (as dark as possible)
Method
Firstly pre-heat the oven to 325ºF.
Mix almond flour, salt, and baking soda well. In a small bowl, mix agave nectar, Macadamia nut oil, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients, mixing well. Add dark chocolate chips. Batter should be thick enough that you can roll a small ball between your palms and set it on the cookie sheet without it drooping or losing shape (see notes).
Make 16 – 20 small balls of cookie dough and space them evenly on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Press the cookies down as flat as possible with the palm of your hand. This is important! The cookies will NOT spread out on their own.
Bake for about 6 minutes. Watch closely and remove when the edges start to brown. . . they could be done at 4 minutes or at 8 minutes depending on the size of the cookie and your oven calibration.
2. Chocolate Cookies – From TheHealthyHousewife.com
These awesome cookies use cocoa powder instead of chocolate chips to get the flavor and it works really well. This is a very quick and easy recipe to follow and you will likely have all of the ingredients needed already lying around the house if you are currently following the Paleo Diet.
Ingredients
- 1 c almond butter
- 1/4 cup dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup raw organic honey
Method
Preheat your oven to 350ºF. In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until thoroughly combined. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Press down slightly on cookies to flatten out. Bake for 10 minutes – now enjoy!
3. Apple and Cinnamon Cookies – Thanks to CivilizedCavemanCooking.com
This Paleo recipe is a great choice for anyone who doesn’t like chocolate, or wants to avoid it for other reasons. Apples and cinnamon really go great together and this cookies recipe really takes advantage of that fact. Here is how to make them…
Ingredients
- 2 Cups Chopped Red Apples
- 2 Cups Raw Almonds
- 1 Cup Shredded Coconut (Unsweetened)
- 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
- 2 Tsp Vanilla
- 2 Tsp Coconut Oil Melted
- 3 Eggs
Overview and Paleo Cookie Tips
So what do you think of the recipes? Be sure to let me know if you try any of them and how you found them. My personal favorite is recipe number 3 with the apple and cinnamon.
If you are going to attempt to make your own cookies or create your own variations of the recipes listed on this page the main thing to keep in mind is that you will need to find ‘good’ alternatives to ingredients such as flour and sugar which would be found in regular, non-Paleo recipes. From reading through this page you will see that Paleo almond cookies are very popular and that most recipes using some form of almond flour as a substitute to normal flour. This is a great place to start, or you could also try coconut flour and make some delicious coconut cookies!
There are plenty of other ingredients you can experiment with (see the Paleo shopping list) in your cookies such as fruits of all kinds, ginger, different nuts and even some vegatables such as pumpkins and carrots. I have also heard that bacon can be used if you are feeling adventurous! Whatever you decide to make, be sure to let me know and I can also get your own cookie recipes uploaded if you like.
Also take a look at my other posts on brownies - they are delicious! And my cool collection of healthy Paleo breakfast ideas. Lastly, some other snacks too.
