If anyone is ever going to go make a mistake with a new eating plan such as low carb, it will probably be when it comes to finding foods to snack on. Unfortunately one or two moments of weakness can often lead to a snowball effect of bad food choices (especially with snacks), then you are back to square one before you know it.
It is very important to keep a list of low carb snacks for when you are ‘on the go’ and don’t really have any time to prepare a proper meal. It is all too easy to just grab a cake or chocolate bar for the sheer convenience, so we want to avoid this wherever possible.
Luckily there are many healthy on the go snacks which low carb dieters can take advantage of. These are quick and easy to prepare, most of the time you can carry them around with you so there really are no excuses for just heading to the nearest McDonalds whenever you get hungry!
Below you will find a list of 6 low carb snacks to go that will make sure your eating plan stays on track and tastes great. You can also check out this link to our fantastic list of 24 great tasting low carb snacks which also contains some simple meal suggestions you can try to make if you have a little more time.
My personal choice of diet plan and the one I recommend to anyone who wants to reduce carbs, burn fat and improve overall health is called the Paleo Diet. Click Here to learn all about it.
Low Carb Snacks On The Go
1. Sugar Free Jello
Jello is a great food to keep around the house so you always have something to snack on with no preparation needed. Make sure you opt for the sugar free version which has an extremely low carb count. For extra flavor you can always add some yoghurt or cream if you do not mind a few more carbs!
2. Boiled Eggs
A boiled egg (or two) is a great snack for the low carb ‘on the go’ dieter. These can be prepared in advance and then refrigerated once boiled, they will easily keep for a few days, just be sure to cool them off under a cold tap before putting them in your fridge. As an added bonus eggs obviously are very high in protein as well. Whenever possible try and purchase organic.
3. Cheese Sticks
Thank god cheese is low in carbs because it is one of my favorite grab and go snacks! Any kind of hard cheese is a great option and is very convenient if you just want to pick up something from the fridge before leaving home. Cheese can be quite high in fat so make sure you don’t overdo it when snacking.
4. Deli Options
If you are out and away from home then keep an eye out for a local deli or any large store with a deli counter as these are great places to find low carb meals on the go. You will very often be able to pick up some kind of chicken, tuna, prawn or shrimp salad very cheaply and made to order. There are also many different pre-prepared salads which can be picked up almost anywhere, these are also great options for eating healthily on the go.
5. Almonds and Other Nuts
Almonds are an all time favorite snack for low carb dieters as they have many health benefits including a high protein content. Almonds can be a great source of energy as they are quite high in calories so if it is going to be a while until your next meal and eating on the go is your only choice then carrying these and other nuts is a great idea. Peanuts are another popular alternative to almonds.
6. Jerky – Beef or Turkey
Jerky is another of my favorite healthy low carb snacks to go. The thing to watch out for when buying jerky is the sugar and salt content which can be high with some of the cheaper brands. Wherever possible, try and buy yours from a health foods supplier rather than a gas station!
I hope that gives you some ideas for low carb snacks on the go which will keep you away from the sugar filled, processed foods we are all too used to eating just to fill a hole!
